Dallas Sex Offender Registration Attorneys
Few convictions are more serious than those for a sex crime. Although you may face only a few years in jail, you will be required to register as a sex offender on the sex offender registry. Everything about you from your name to your place of residence will be public information, and you will forever face the stigma of your actions.
At Patrick J. McLain, Attorney at Law, we provide the tough representation you need to defend a sex crime accusation and avoid sex offender registration. Contact our criminal defense firm to speak with one of our Dallas sex offender registration lawyers about your case.
Basic Information About the Sex Offender Registry
A person convicted of a sexual offense, such as rape or child sexual abuse, is classified as a Tier I, Tier II or Tier III sex offender. The penalties and amount of time someone needs to register as a sex offender varies according to the classification.
- A Tier I sex offender must register for 15 years, although that time is usually reduced if the person maintains a clear record.
- A Tier II sex offender must register for 25 years.
- A Tier III sex offender must register for life unless he or she was a minor at the time of conviction.
Once on the registry, the person will need to submit his or her name, age, a photo and place of residence. Typically, the person cannot live within a certain distance from a school, park or other place where children play. Additionally, the registrant is required by law to immediately notify local authorities of any plans to move. The community will be notified when a registered sex offender moves into a nearby residence.
